Guests enjoyed a special Student Showcase in the Mayo Courtyard. The lunch program featured speeches by UMW Foundation Chair Kathy Mehfoud ’70, UMW President Richard Hurley, Robert Strassheim ’96, Sarah Strassheim ’01, and Karmel James ’13.  Anissa Felix ’13 entertained guests with two musical performances, and Haley Campbell ’13 brought most everyone to tears as she read a special poem about her upcoming graduation.

Keepsake photos of donors and recipients were taken in front of Kalnen Inn. Hosted by the Office of University Advancement, the annual event honored Scholarship donors and members of the Heritage and Washington Societies.

Guests were greeted by creative nutcrackers and student carolers.  Inside, three groups representing the UMW Philharmonic performed special holiday tunes.

After dinner, the nutcrackers escorted President Hurley to the stage for a short speech and a special toast.  All in all, it was a terrific way to kick off the holiday season while celebrating the impact of private giving on students and programs at the University of Mary Washington.

President of the Learning by Giving Foundation Alex Buffett Rozek spoke to Professor Robert Rycroft’s class, representatives of three local nonprofits who received grant awards, and guests including President Hurley and Doris Buffett.

“UMW was the site of one of our first philanthropy class programs,” Rozek said, “so it is appropriate that this is now the site of the first live broadcast through Google Hangout as we seek to expand philanthropy beyond classrooms and beyond traditional walls.”

Professor Rycroft opened the program, President Hurley commended the students for their work, and Rozek recognized the trailblazing work and philanthropic vision of his grandmother – Doris Buffett. A representative of Google and the Academic Director of the Learning by Giving Foundation also participated in the live broadcast. Kramer is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Affairs at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. He also has served as Visiting Professor of Strategy and Policy at the United States Naval War College; Research Fellow for the Russian Research Center at Harvard University, Senior Fellow for National Defense University, and Fulbright-Hayes Fellow in Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.

Professor Kramer received a doctorate in Political Science and Soviet Area Studies from the University of Virginia, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, a DuPont Fellow, and a University Fellow. In 2002, the Virginia Social Science Association named him the “Outstanding Political Scientist of Virginia,” and in 2006, the University of Mary Washington named him the recipient of its Grellet C. Simpson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. He wrote The Energy Gap in Eastern Europe (D.C.Heath, 1990) and numerous articles and professional papers on political life in Communist and Post-Communist polities in Europe.

The generous gifts from 7,787 UMW donors provided support for the Fund for Mary Washington, new and enhanced scholarships, and additional programs within the three colleges, athletics, and UMW’s cultural organizations and museums. In addition to gifts, the University received more than $4 million in new estate plan commitments from 18 Heritage Society members and $1.3 million in multi-year pledges.

Overall, the 2012 fiscal year was an exciting period of discovery as many alumni and friends renewed their connections with the University and now are making plans for additional ways to offer their support to UMW students and programs.
